This past weekend I ran the Warrior Dash with my college roomie and another friend from Hastings College. After being lost in Louisville, NE for a good 15 minutes we finally made our way to the paintball course where the Warrior Dash was being held. We unloaded from the car, laced up our nasty old running shoes, and donned bandannas (obviously an attempt to look way more BA than we really are)!
We decided to avoid the $20 parking fee and walked a mile to the event grounds. We couldn’t help but notice how everyone coming back from the race was not only covered from head to toe in mud but they were also walking with a certain “strut” while they donned their medals. We promptly noted that we would avoid doing the “mud strut” ourselves.
When we finally got to the event grounds we were engulfed in people and a whole lot of dust. I’m talking massive amounts of dust. Tilled up cornfield + thousands of people + high wind = dirty, nasty, sweaty mess…..that was a blast! We were running a bit behind so we signed waivers, clipped on our numbers and hopped in the starting line. At the last minute we did a few toe touches for good measure (didn’t want to pull a muscle!)
The course was super hilly and it was a super hot day but we managed to survive! The obstacles were a nice break from running up and down hills and the nice, cool pond swim was the best part of the whole thing! It was also awesome because as we slipped and slid our way to the bank Erin was laughing and pointing at this guy who biffed it right in front of us. As she raised her arm to point and laugh she slipped right back onto her butt….it was priceless!!
After we crawled/swam through the final pit of mud we attempted to shower off by the fire trucks. This was not successful so we finally just decided to let ourselves bake in the sun and flake off slowly (lovely mental image I know). We enjoyed the people watching while we drank our complimentary Miller Light tall boy. FYI people watching makes me very aware of the silly things I do that I assume no one notices and sometime, somewhere there is going to be a people-watcher making fun of me! lol!!
After we finished our beer we headed home, flaked off as much mud as we could and showered to get ready for Celebrate Lincoln. Lee Brice played the outdoor concert and I had NO IDEA how much I loved his music. He has written so many songs I love! Great day, great night, great friends….the weekend was very much a success!
